Saturday November 8th

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 3 Southport Amateurs 2

This was the third meeting of these teams this season and, having conceded ten goals in the previous two encounters, the Reserves would have been forgiven for being a touch defensive. However, they put out an attacking formation and, went at the Amateurs from the off. This was by far the best performance by the Reserves this season and, they produced some excellent passing moves. However, they had to come back from two goals behind to secure this victory. The game was very open as, both teams searched for an opening. As a Reserves' attack broke down, they were caught on the break and, a free kick was conceded on the edge of the box. The Amateurs' big striker stepped up and curled the ball over the wall and, in to the corner of the net. Five minutes later, it was two. Again the big striker was involved as, he turned two defenders very easily. The ball was played square and the first time shot was beyond Pollitt in the Saints net. The Reserves did not let their heads drop and, continued to play their passing game, with a tempo that Southport found hard to live with. In the twenty fifth minute, Chris Bridgett played an inch perfect pass to 'Dis' Scarborough on the edge of the area. His first touch took the ball past his marker, his second touch, fired the ball home. With three minutes left of the half, the Amataeur's 'keeper failed to hold an Alex Holland shot and, Scarborough bundled the ball home. In the second half, the Reserves continued to play well and, there was only ever going to be one outcome to this game. However, Amateurs are no push over and, had a couple of half chances themselves. With fifteen minutes remaining, Scarborough picked the ball upon the edge of the area and decided to try his luck. His luck was in! The 'keeper should have made an easy save but, fumbled and, 'Dis' had his hatrick. This was a well earned victory and, the margin could have been greater, had the boys taken all their chances.

Saturday November 1st

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 3 Eccleston & Heskin 2

Despite taking a second minute lead, the Reserves struggled to impose their quality on this game. Deon Park opened the scoring, when 'Dis' Scarborough played an inch perfect pass to split the E & H defence. One touch and, in. Having conceded five in their previous game you would have forgiven E & H for folding. However, they responded well and, the Reserves failed to capitalise on their early advantage. They did have patches of play that showed they were capable of producing good quality football but, these were few and far between and, tended to break down on the edge of the E & H penalty area. E & H were well organised and, worked together as a team. It was no surprise that they equalised on the twenty five minute mark. This was well deserved as, the Reserves had sat back on their lead and, had seemed to forgotten how to pass the ball five yards. At half time Joe & Jim said that if they raised the quality and, kept the ball better, the Reserves still had enough in the locker to go on and win the game. However, within two minutes of the restart, E & H had taken the lead following yet another stray pass from a St Gerards' player. This did spark the Reserves in to life but, the quality on the ball was still lacking. With the E & H defence looking very resolute and having already introduced Danny Horton & Ian Hayes, Joe threw on a third attacker in the shape of Alex Holland and,went with three at the back. By now the work rate of the Saints was starting to wear E & H down and they were struggling to cope with the extra striker. With eight minutes to go, their left back lunged for a ball that he could never get and, fouled Kev Omerod. Having been earlier booked for deliberate hand ball, he found himself on the receiving end of a second yellow card. The boys now had extra incentive to push on but, still the E & H defence stood strong. On the ninetieth minute, Danny Horton latched on to a through ball and, rounded the keeper to slot home from the narrowest of angles. Two minutes later, he had his second and, St Gerards' third of the game. E & H struggled to clear a corner. The ball fell to Horton with his back to goal; he hooked the ball over his head and, over the keeper. The defender on the back post, could only help it in to the net, under pressure from David Hayes. Little quality but, plenty of graft and team work. It wasn't pretty but, another three points helps keep the Reserves away from the wrong end of the table.

Saturday 25th October

Town Green 1 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 3

The Reserves started this game very positively and, opened up with some very attractive football. With Man Of The Match Kev Omerod controlling midfield, Deon Park was free to get busy going forward. He linked up play with the two forwards well and, created quite a lot down the right hand side with Kev Nutter and 'Sid' Wastell. However, they had to come from behind to win as; it was Green who took first blood. A long ball was played over the top and, the Green striker hit it first time in to the corner of the net. Dave Hayhurst making his first start in the Saints' goal, got a hand to it but, could not prevent it creeping in. However, he more than made up for that with two excellent second half saves, with the scores still at 1 - 1. Following the goal, there was a ten minute spell when you could have been forgiven for thinking 'here we go again'. Town Green, obviously buoyed by their goal and started to push the Reserves back. However, the boys showed great determination to get back in to the game and were soon playing football in the Green half again. In the second minute of added time, Green failed to clear a corner. There was a bit of a scramble and, the ball fell to Kev Ormerod who, swivelled and, placed the ball in the left hand corner. The second half was very much in the same vein as the first, with the Reserves camped in the Green half and, Green playing on the counter. On the hour mark, 'Sid' Wastell burst in to the area, as he was about to shoot, he was felled from behind. Everyone expected the Referee to point to the spot but, despite his Assistant flagging, the Referee waved play on. Wastell was unable to carry on and, was replaced by Alex Holland. It was then that Hayhurst in goal made his two saves to keep the Reserves in the game. Firstly, as the Green striker came through one on one, he narrowed the angle and saved well with his legs. Secondly, he turned a low shot around the post, just as it looked like we would go 2 - 1 down. With fifteen minutes to go, Joe introduced Ian Hayes to the fray. This meant a bit of a reshuffle in midfield, but it also meant an extra injection of energy. Following a move down the left hand side involving Dave Hayes, Paul Lakeland and Alex Holland, Lakeland found himself in on goal. His first time shot was well saved by the Green 'keeper but, Dan McCarthy was 'Johnny On The Spot' and, drove the ball home. From the restart, Green went on the offensive. However, the Saints were not about to give up their well earned points. The defence stood firm and, it was the Reserves turn to counter attack. The ball was played out to Holland, he had a couple of interchanges with Lakeland before, rolling the ball in to his path just inside the area. As Lakeland ran on to the ball he was brought down by two defenders. This time the Referee did point to the spot. Lakeland picked himself up to put the 'keeper the wrong way and, seal this much needed and, deserved win.

Saturday 18th October

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 0 New longton Rovers 3

The Reserves' first home game since August saw Premier division new boys New Longton Rovers visit The Gasworks. However, the return home did nothing to change their fortunes. The early exchanges were pretty even but, when you're struggling, you rarely get the rub of the green. On the twentieth minute mark, the Saints failed to clear a corner. This led to a scramble and, in the frenzy to clear, a foot was left adrift and the Rovers striker went down. The referee had no alternative but to point to the spot. The New Longton spot kick was well converted and, immediately the doubts crept in to the St Gerards' heads. Fifteen minutes later, another defensive mistake led to a New Longton second. A ball played over the top of the defence, found the St Gerards fullback facing his own goal, with a Rovers striker closing in. The sensible thing would have been to find touch. However, in keeping with the team's recent run of mistakes, he decided to try to bring it under control. The Rovers striker muscled him off the ball and produced an excellent finish. 2-0 at half-time and, New Longton were good for their lead. The Reserves came out for the second half all pumped up and, proceeded to play some nice football. The vast majority of the second half was played in the New Longton half but, despite their dominance, the Reserves rarely troubled the New Longton 'keeper. With ten minutes to go another mistake led to Rovers' third goal. The Saints' centre half picked the ball up on the edge of his area. The Rovers' striker had a couple of niggles at his ankle and, the referee looked like he was going to blow but, didn't. For some unknown reason, the defender plated the ball right across the face of goal and, in to the path of the oncoming striker, who struck it first time in to the bottom corner. The Reserves deserved something for their second half performance, but they lacked quality in the final third. Back n the road next week, it's difficult to see where the next goal is coming from.

Saturday 11th October

Southport Amateurs 4 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 0

The Reserves' defence of the Guildhall Cup fell at the first hurdle, away to Southport Amateurs. The first half was very much a case of huff & puff without any real cutting edge; a Dave Scarborough effort that was blocked by the 'keeper, was the only chance the Reserves created in the first forty five minutes. However, there was a good work ethic and a determination about the boys, that hadn't been there a week earlier. All square at the interval. The second half saw a return of the defensive frailties that have haunted the Saints all season. Two quick goals saw Amateurs take a strangle hold on the tie, a hold they were never going relinquish. As the Saints pushed to get back in to the game, they were caught on the break a further two times. Amateurs were good for their win whilst, the Reserves need to add some quality to their work ethic.

Saturday 4th October

Southport Amateurs 6 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 3

The Reserves started well in this wind affected game, with 'dis' Scarborough taking first blood. However, poor defending was their downfall yet again and, they soon found themselves 2 - 1 down. They did respond well and Scarborough soon had them level with his fourth goal in two games. Again the start to the second half was positive and they looked to press for the lead. Unfortunately, as they were pressing, they were caught on the break and, paid the price for slack marking with not one, but two quick goals. The Reserves pulled one back through Luke Rossall, but a further two late goals, one a fire cracker of a free-kick, saw the fight slip away from the Reserves. The saints return to Southport next week to start the defence of the Guildhall Cup. The whole team must work to sort out their defensive frailties, if they are to be successful in that defence.

Saturday 27th September

Leyland Red Rose 1 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 3

Following recent heavy defeats, it was important for the Reserves to get off to a good start and, they did just that. The opening fifteen minutes were a joy to watch as the Saints played some excellent stuff. However, it was Rose who created the first real goal scoring opportunity. A loose ball dropped invitingly to a Rose player on the edge of the box, he struck it sweetly and, his shot looked bound for the top corner until Andy Pollitt sprung to his left to tip the ball over the bar.When the corner came in, Kev Nutter headed clear to Alex Holland. He picked up the ball on the halfway line and raced clear of the Rose defence. He then cut across the last defender and rolled the ball in to the path of Dave Scarborough whose first time, left footed shot, gave the 'keeper no chance. The Reserves won the ball back straight from the restart and, following good work from Park and Holland on the right, the ball found its way to skipper McCarthy who slotted home coolly. Unfortunately, the Reserves then took their foot off the pedal and, Rose came back in to the game. On the stroke of half-time, poor St Gerards' defending led to a lifeline for Red Rose. Joe and Jim rallied the troops during the interval and, within fifteen minutes of the restart, Scarborough on to a Park through ball to restore the two goal lead. The rest of the second half pretty even but, Pollitt had to pull two great saves out of the bag late on. A much improved performance but, still a long way to go to be where the Reserves want to be.

Saturday 20th SeptemberLostock St Gerards 2 Hawcoat Park 1

A lucky win for St Gerards... but you make your own luck don't you. The Saints went ahead after 7 minutes after a disastrous attempt at a back pass let in the Saints striker who made no mistake, 1-0.

That was about as good as it got. With St Gerards unable to get out of second gear Hawcoat started to get a grip of the game and it was no surprise when they equalised on 30 minutes from a free kick. Half time 1-1.

The second half didn't get much better and the introduction of Campbell and Ryding returning from injury and Spain respectively added pace but still we didn't get the flowing football that has been a feature of the last few games. On 65 minutes the Saints got a penalty. The keeper saved well to his left , but the alert Cowell pounced and smashed in the rebound. Gerards held on for the remainder of the game and gratefully took all the points. Hawcoat will play worse and win this season, the Saints, well they travel to Dalton next week in the Lancashire Amateur Shield and if anyone was watching from Dalton they must fancy their chances.

Burscough Richmond 5 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 0

Quite frankly, the first half performance by the Reserves in this game was unacceptable and, Richmond were well worth their 4-0 half time lead. They were fitter, stronger in the tackle and, had much more desire than the Reserves. The second half saw some improvement but, not enough to make and an impact on the score. In fact Burscough went on to add a fifth. The fact that the Burscough 'keeper didn't make a save until the 80th minute shows that Joe & Jim have their work cut out to improve performances.

Tuesday 2nd September 2008

Longridge Town 5 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 0

A much depleted Reserves side travelled all the way to Longridge on a cold and wet Tuesday evening. Longridge started strongly and but for good defending by Danny Barnes could have taken the lead in the first minute. Town have a side that could make a strong challenge for the title and had wave after wave of attack on the St Gerards' goal. On twenty minutes, the pressure told and, Town took the lead. Another mad five minutes saw the Saints go three down. A reshuffle in the defence stabilised things and the Reserves started to get a foothold in the game. The Reserves came out fired up for the second half and, were awarded a penalty. Three penalties in three games, a third different player and, you've guessed it, another miss. This time Kev Nutter was the man on the spot. The Reserves continued to press and the game looked a more even affair. However, with twenty five minutes to go, Town were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. The referee had told the defence 'on his whistle' but, he allowed the kick to be taken before he blew. This caught the defence on the hop and, Town took advantage to score the fourth. The fifth came in the dying minutes from a corner. An improved second half performance but, the saints need to stop having these 'mad five minutes' if their results are to improve.

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 2 Town Green 2

The Reserves bounced back from Tuesday's defeat by starting this fixture very confidently. They zipped the ball around beautifully and, it seemed only a matter of time before they took the lead. After twenty minutes Green failed to clear a Saints corner, the ball fell to Lakeland 8 yards out. He struck the ball goal wards first time and, his shot deflected off two Green defenders in to the back of the net. Unfortunately, the boys then took their foot off the gas and, allowed Green back in to the game. Fifteen minutes later, Green were 2 - 1 up following slack defending from the Reserves. This spurred them back in to the life and the Alex Holland became increasingly dangerous. Just before half-time, Holland picked the ball up just inside the Green half. He dribbled his way through the defence, rounded the 'keeper and, slotted home with aplomb. The second half was all about the Reserves attacking and, Green defending. Unfortunately, they could not make the breakthrough. However, with three minutes to go, Holland was upended in the area and a penalty was awarded. 'Tiff' Hornby stepped up to take it but, his effort was easily saved. This was definitely a case of two points dropped for the Reserves.

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 2 Preston Wanderers 4

The Reserves entertained the league champions for the first home game of the season. The first ten minutes were pretty even, with both sides looking to get forward at every opportunity. After fifteen minutes, a poor clearance by St Gerards was punished by the Wanderers’ forward who pounced and flashed a fantastic volley in to the roof of the net. Four minutes later, it was all square. A fine passing move down the left hand side involving McCarthy, Holland and Lakeland resulting in Lakeland’s cross being handled in the area. Park stepped up to take the spot kick. The Wanderers’ keeper saved well, only for the alert Cowell to fire home. Wanderers responded well and, were soon 2 – 1 up following another defensive mistake. The Reserves showed good spirit and another good move down the left hand side found Alex Holland unmarked in the area. He slotted home coolly, only for the linesman to raise his flag for offside. Even the away defence were bemused by this decision. Unfortunately, this spurred the visitors on and a mad five minutes by the Saints defence left them 1- 4 down. After this the Reserves settled down and the game evened out. Just before half time, the Reserves thought they had scored again. A corner was fumbled by the ‘keeper, the ball was volleyed home, only for a delayed whistle to cancel out what again, looked a perfectly good goal. Preston Wanderers showed why they won the league last season but, at times, the Reserves showed they could match them for football. In the second half the performance did improve but, they could just not make the break through. A second goal did finally come with ten minutes to go. Wastell made a good run down the right and, a Wanderers defender turned the ball in to his own net. Early days but, better defending is required if the Reserves are to be successful this season.

Croston Reserves 0 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 4

The opening day of the 08/09 season saw the reserves travel the short distance to Croston. From the first whistle the Saints' Reserves controlled this game with their fast flowing passing game. They could have took the lead early on, when the tireless Park put the Croston full back under pressure. He took the ball from him, drew the keeper before squaring the ball to Lakeland. Despite the ball coming in behind him, he still managed to get a shot away.Unfortunately, a Croston defender managed to head clear from the line. Five minutes later, the deadlock was broken. Phil Howarth controlled a loose ball in the centre of the park, under pressure; he played out of trouble with McCarthy before setting Park free down the right hand side. He put a cross in for the alert Alex Holland to fire home. Another five minutes and the lead was doubled following a touch of magic from Dan McCarthy. He latched on to a poor clearance by Croston and, from all of thirty five yards, hammered a thunderbolt past the helpless Croston keeper. In the second half the Reserves continued to play well and Croston were limited to very few chances. When Croston did threaten, the back four of Rossall, Bridgett, Hayes and Barnes closed ranks and, coped well. Nick Brazier, making his debut in the Saints goal, had little to do but, what he did do,he looked comfortable. On the hour mark, Dave Scarborough got in on the act. Good work by Barnes, Lakeland and Howarth, once again saw the ball in the Croston box. Scarborough was the first to react and, slotted home coolly. The fourth came after Cairon Roddy replaced Holland. He picked the ball up in midfield and drove at the Croston defence. He played the ball in to Scarborough and then took the return in his stride to place the ball in the far corner beyond the reach of the keeper. A promising start but, reigning Champions Preston Wanderers are up next. They will be a much tougher proposition.

Lostock St Gerards 6 Milnthorpe Corinthians 3

Milnthorpe had the better of the early exchanges in Lostocks first home league outing and for a while it looked like the points were heading North up the M6. Eventually Lostock got on top and went in 4-1 up. A fifth for Lostock would have finished most teams of, but Milnthorpe kept working and got a second, which was met almost immediately with Lostock's sixth. Milnthorpe completed the scoring on 86 minutes to make it 6-3.

Furness Rovers 0 Lostock St Gerards 2

The first game of the season, away in Barrow on a blustery, grey day in mid -August! Lostock started confidently as did Furness, with neither side creating many chances. The break through came on the stroke of half-time when the Saints scored from a corner. Lostock got the killer second goal with a good passing move on 70 minutes.

Thursday 22nd May

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 3 Tarleton Corinthians 2

And Finally......The last game of the season saw the Reserves start very confidently and, go 2- 0 up in the first ten minutes. The first came after a goal mouth scramble that saw Dean Campbell have three bites of the cherry before finally hitting the back of the net. The second came from the spot, after Dis Scarborough had been felled. Deon Park converting for his fifteenth of the season. St Gerards seemed to be cruising and, playing good football. However, Tarleton were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Saints area. The kick was blasted against the wall, unfortunately the deflection took it in to the back of the net giving stand in 'keeper Jake Baldwin little chance of saving it. The second half became very scrappy and both teams looked like mid-table teams playing the season out. The Reserves did extend their lead, Jon Bolton nodding home after the 'keeper had parried a shot on to the bar. Tarleton replied late on but, for the third time this season, it was St Gerards that came out on top.

Joe & Jim would like to thank all players for their efforts in what has been a long hard season. Everyone who has pulled on a shirt has contributed to a successful season; Guildhall Cup winners and fifth in the first season back in the Premier division. They would also like to thank all those that work behind the scenes, without who, we would not be able to put teams out.

Tuesday 20th May

Appley Bridge 5 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 1

A real Jekyll and Hyde performance saw the Reserves go from roaring lions in the first half to lambs to the slaughter in the second. St Gerards started this game by playing some of their best football for a long time. Despite this, they found themselves a goal down after only fifteen minutes, after failing to clear a Bridge corner. This was totally against the run of play and, it seemed to spur the Reserves on. Ten minutes later, Wastell picked the ball up on the half way line. He played it back to Tinsley and then broke left, taking two defenders with him. Tinsley then played a superb, defence splitting pass in to the path of McCarthy who stuck it across the goal first time. Wastell had continued his run in to the area and, hammered the ball in to the roof of the net. After that, we saw wave after wave of St Gerards attacks but, all opportunities were wasted. At half time there only looked one winner. However, Bridge needed the win to secure their Premier league status. They came out all guns blazing, the Reserves did not. In truth a few of the players did not look interested and the four goals Bridge scored were well earned. That said, the Reserves still created enough to win this game. They need to get their shooting boots on for the last game of the season. That's on Thursday in a repeat of the Guildhall Cup final, against Tarleton at home.

Tuesday 13th May

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 0 Preston Wanderers 0

The 5th game in 8 days for the Reserves saw them entertain the newly crowned Champions of the Premier division at the Gasworks. Preston Wanderers started the stronger of the two and, their football showed just why they had won the league. However, slowly but surely, the Reserves fought their way in to this match and by half time were looking more comfortable. The second half saw the reserves in the ascendancy and, they created a number of chances following good work from Cowell, Scarbprough and Hornby. Skipper Matt Tinsley had a great 25 yard strike parried away by the keeper and, St Gerards looked like they could go on to win. Following changes by both teams, the final twenty minutes were more even with both teams trying for and, almost forcing a winner. St Gerards thought they had done this when Dan McCarthy struck with five minutes to go, only for the Referee's Assistant to mysteriously wipe the 'goal' off for offside, despite the fact that McCarthy had started his run from behind two defenders. A point a piece and Wanderers went off to celebrate a well earned title.

Saturday 10th May

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 0 Southport Trinity 3

Despite an improved performance from the Reserves, Southport Trinity gained revenge for their cup semi-final defeat with a comprehensive victory at Wateringpool Lane. St Gerards found themselves behind on twelve minutes following a wonder strike from the Trinity forward. The rest of the first half was pretty even but, the Reserves struggled to make a break through. More of the same in the second half but, on 65 minutes slack marking let a Trinity striker in for a free header and the Reserves were 2 - 0 down. Ten minutes later, another free header and it was 3 - 0. These three points should be enough to secure runners-up spot for last year's champions but, for the reserves, even more games to follow.

Thursday 8th May

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 1 Town Green 4

The second game in two days and, the third in four, was bridge too far for the Reserves. They started bright enough with some slick passing in the opening five minutes. However, slowly but surely, Green eased their way in to the game, to the point that the Reserves looked lost at sea. In the twenty fifth minute, Town put a hopeful ball into the box, there was confusion between the keeper and the defence and, the forward nodded backwards to open the scoring. Five minutes later, it was 2 - 0. Town hit the reserves on the break and, a desperate lunge by Valentine resulted in a spot kick. The Reserves came out for the second half all fired up but, unfortunately found themselves 3 - 0 down within five minutes. They reacted well and, pushed town back but, unfortunately, they looked like they had settled for what they had got and, sat behind the ball. Eventually the pressure told and fifteen minutes in, a good move down the right involving Dean Campbell resulted in 'Sid' Wastell clawing one back. The Reserves continued pressing but, were reduced to ten men with fifteen to go. A quick reshuffle and, the pressure on the Town Green defence continued but to no avail. With less than a minute to go, Green were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Gerards' area. The striker stepped up and smashed a superb strike in to the top corner. With the top two still to visit the Gasworks, Joe and Jim have a lot of work to do, in order to finish the season off with a flourish.

Wednesday 7th May

Houghton West End 1 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 0

On a rock hard bumpy surface, the depleted Reserve team played their second game in three days. Despite a strong second half performance they lost for the first time in six games. Without both regular centre halves and only one recognised striker, the Reserves made a good start and went close to opening the scoring on a couple of occasions, notably from Wastell and Lakeland. On twenty minutes West End were awarded a throw in which was taken quickly. Unfortunately the centre forward was allowed to turn too easily and forced his way past four Saints defenders to score the only goal of the game. St Gerards responded well but, tried to play too much football on a surface that just didn't allow it. The second half was one way traffic, with an endless procession of St Gerards attacks. Despite all the pressure, the experienced Houghton defence held out and the Reserves were restricted to half chances. They now need to dust themselves down and prepare for what will be their third game in four days tomorrow night.

Monday 5th May

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 4 Baxters 3

On a muggy Bank Holiday Monday evening the Reserves picked up another three points and moved in to 5th place in the league. The Reserves started strongly and went close to opening the scoring on a number of occasions before Stuart Parry eventually managed to break the deadlock on twenty five minutes. Having already hit a jumping wall from a free-kick, Parry cleverly placed his next effort under the wall and beyond the desperate dive of the keeper. Five minutes later, Skipper Matt Tinsley made it 2 - 0 with a burst in to the box and a left foot volley following good work from Parry down the right. Two minutes later, it was 3 - 0. 'DIS' Scarborough beat the offside trap and fired home in off the far post. The Reserves were well on top and deserved their half-time lead. Five minutes in to the second half and it was 4 - 0. Parry beat the offside trap, was one on one with the keeper, who upended him to give away a penalty. Parry picked himself up and placed the penalty in to the corner of the net. Unfortunately, this was the signal for the Reserves to take the foot of the gas and allow Baxters in to the game. Some sloppy defending left stand in 'keeper Jake Baldwin exposed and he was beaten for the first time. Baxters are fighting for their premier division survival and came back with another two goals. The last ten minutes was all Baxters with the Reserves hitting them on the break. They managed to hang on to their lead but, with a heavy schedule coming up they need to improve on this performance. Baxters will feel that their second half performance deserved at least a point but, it was St Gerards that took the spoils.

Lostock St Gerards 0 Furness Rovers 1

The long unbeaten league run finally came to an end on Saturday in what was agreed by players and management alike to be a below average performance. Furness Rovers played their part in one of the poorest games seen at the Lane this season. To be fair neither team looked like scoring although Campbell did score only for it to be disallowed by the referee for deliberate handball. The Furness keeper later admitted he dropped the ball and the alert Campbell walked it into an empty net. Halftime 0 - 0 and aside from the Campbell 'goal' only one other noteworthy effort from Stead. On 65 minutes disaster struck. Furness played a ball down the left, the Rover shrugged off Greenwood's challenge and played a ball into the Saints box Furness got a touch 0 -1.

The Saints pushed Horsfield forward in an attempt to get a goal and this nearly paid dividends as Horsfield broke through and laid the ball to Stead only for the strikers shot to hit the inside of the post and rebound to safety.

The referee blew for fulltime and brought the curtain down on St Gerards season. A disappointing end, but if we turn half of the draws into wins next season we will be in the shake up come next April.

Guildhall Cup Final

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 5 Tarleton Corinthians 2

Oh what a night! The Reserves came from behind to bring home the Guildhall Cup for the first time in the club's history. The game started well enough with 'Dis' Scarborough putting them 1-0 up inside five minutes. This should have served to settle all the big match nerves but, it appeared to have the opposite effect. The first half was littered with St Gerards' mistakes, whilst Tarleton grew in to the game. On the half hour mark, Tarleton were awarded a penalty and levelled the scores. Five minutes later a Tarleton player waltzed through the St Gerards' midfield and defence and the Reserves found themselves 2-1 down. Following a half-time rallying call from Joe and Jim, the Reserves came out all fired up. The midfield quartet of Wastell, McCarthy, Tinsley and Park started to dominate whilst the defensive five of Slater, Campbell, Valentine, Stokes and Baldwin appeared to be more secure as a unit. The Reserves were now playing better foottball and started to create chances in front of goal but despite plenty of endeavour, Holland and Scarborough up front, couldn't find the equalising goal. Over the final twenty five minutes all three substitutes were introduced as the Reserves chased the game. Enter, Stead, Cowell and Hornby. It was a combination of two of these that finally brought the equaliser with only three minutes to go. Hornby swung a left footed corner in to the box and Stead rose to nod home. Tarleton visibly wilted and the Reserves could smell victory. In the final few minutes they pushed for a winner but, it didn't come. So to extra time. Within minutes of the re-start St Gerards had another corner and another Stead goal. 3-2 up and the fight was gone from a very tired looking Tarleton. Ten minutes later the jubilant St Gerards' supporters were celebrating a Stead hat-trick. Tinsley split the defence, Stead raced past a static back four to lift the ball past the on rushing 'keeper in to an empty net. In to the second half of extra time, St Gerards were playing excellent football and Scarborough made it 5-2 when he latched on to another defence splitting pass to coolly slot home. Dan McCarthy was voted Man of the Match by the league committee but, any number of players in green and white could have won it following the commencement of the second half.

St Gerards went into this game needing a win to cement a minimum fourth place and keep alive the possibility of promotion. We welcomed back Will Cowell for his first start for many months and also Will Yates took a place on the bench both after long term injuries.

The early exchanges were pretty even with Whinney Hill set up 4-5-1and taking advantage of the cold Easterly wind for set plays, St Gerards countered using the width with Cowell and Roddy raiding down the left and right flanks, it was on one of these raids that Roddy put in an early cross, the keeper came and under pressure from Cowell missed the catch for Cowell to score, 1-0 to the Saints. An injury to Barton meant that the team had to be changed at half time with Yates making an unexpected return to first team duty in goal. Ten minutes in and after a couple of decent save Yates was planted to the floor as a speculative drive found the top corner. This seemed to spark St Gerards into life and attack after attack rained down on the beleagured Whinney Hill defence. Campbell was fouled on the edge of the area, Stead and Randell stood over the ball, was this a free kick manufactured on the tracks? would it be the precision of Randell or the sledge hammer right foot of Stead? It was Stead. He drove the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Five minutes later and it was three. Hard work and persistance by Greenwood and Roddy on the right resulted in a pin point cross to Stead who chested down and cooly slotted home. On 75 minutes Roddy was substituted for Holland. With the game now in the bag St Gerards pressed for another goal and it was Randell who provided it, he ran unchallenged at the heart of the Whinney Hill defence and 25 yards out let fly. The keeper didn't move. 4-1. Randell was substituted on 88 minutes and this gave McCarthy a cameo appearance up front with Stead dropping into midfield. A comprehensive win eventually for St Gerards which sees them move up to fourth.

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 2 Burscough Bridge 1

On a cold blustery afternoon the Reserves set out to continue their recent good run of form. However, it was Burscough that started the stronger, with the Reserves pegged back for the opening ten minutes. It looked like the St Gerards boys had a certain cup final on their minds as they just went through the motions. That was to change on fifteen minutes; the Reserves were awarded a free kick twenty five yards out. 'Tiff' Hornby stepped up and smacked it in to the top corner, the keeper didn't even move. The Reserves then started to play better and five minutes later, the best footballing move of the game saw Skipper Matt Tinsley put them two up. John Bolton picked the ball up on the left, he played it down the line to Watling who played it instantly inside to Tinsley. Tinsley played it in to Scarborough and continued his run in to the box. Scarborough played it in to the path of Tinsley, who stroked it home with the outside of his right foot. The rest of the first half was all about St Gerards possession without really creating chances. The second half however, was a different story. A fired up Bridge came out all guns blazing and got one back almost immediately. A free kick was fired in to the box and, the Bridge centre forward volleyed home smartly. It was then backs to the wall for the Reserves as Bridge pushed for an equaliser. Man of the Match Jordan Valentine was a rock in the centre of defence and Paul Lakeland made two crucial blocks late on. Despite all the pressure, Paul Slater in goal was rarely called upon to make a save. However, the three points came at a price with three key players picking up injuries. It's now a race against time to get them fit for next Friday's final.

Croston Reserves 2 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 6

A confident performance from the Reserves saw them rack up another three points away from home. In the first ten minutes Croston barely got out of their own half with the lively Stead and Holland causing all sorts of problems for the home defence. In the twelfth minute the pressure told when a Park corner found Luke Atherton at the far post, he rose unchallenged to nod home. Eight minutes later it was two; Will Cowell picked the ball up deep in the Reserves half. He drove in to the opposition half and, the space just opened up in front of him. Twenty five yards out, he sent a low shot goalwards and, John Stead was on hand to place it past the keeper. St Gerards were then forced in to an early change when Paul Lakeland sustained a recurrence of an ankle injury,Gaz Jervis came on to replace him. The Reserves were once again playing some nice football and could have extended their lead before half time but, the Croston defence rode their luck. The third did eventually come straight from the kick-off in the second half. Dan McCarthy sent a long ball in to the corner for Alex Holland to chase. He held the ball up until support arrived in the shape of Scarborough and McCarthy, they worked the ball around the Croston defence for Holland to drive a low cross in to the feet of Stead who coolly tapped the ball home. This took just twelve seconds. Unfortunately, a good move down the Croston right saw them pull one back and give them a little hope. However, this was short lived as Atherton once again rose like a salmon to nod home another far post corner. This was quickly followed by a fifth from John Bolton. He burst through the centre of the defence to latch on to a through ball from McCarthy. His first touch took the ball beyond a despairing keeper. His second, a left foot volley found the back of an empty net. With fifteen minutes to go Croston pulled another goal back following a lapse of concentration from the defence. The tireless Holland completed the scoring five minutes later with a delicate lob following good work from Hornby. A good team performance, let's hope the boys keep this form going in to next week's cup final.

Southport Amateurs 2 Lostock St Gerards Reserves 3

With the majority of games off in Preston, the Amateurs' groundsman has to be applauded for providing such a good playing surface to host this clash. Amateurs are top of the league and going strong, so this was a tough test for the Reserves following defeat to Longridge Town. Southport started very positively and it was easy to see why they see themselves as genuine title contenders. However, the Reserves responded well and, when Deon Park picked up a loose ball twenty five yards out the deadlock was broken. He hit a right foot shot that took a couple of deflections on its way into the net to leave the Amateurs 'keeper stranded. The dubious goals panel (Joe & Jim) sat long in to Saturday night before awarding the goal to Park. Now the Reserves relaxed and started to play their passing game. Five minutes later, they doubled their lead. Good work down the left involving Baldwin, Cowell and Scarborough saw the ball fizz across the penalty area to find 'Sid' Wastell lurking at the far post. He hit it first time and sent a sweet strike into the corner of the net. 2 - 0 and the Reserves were playing some great football. However, so were Amateurs and, the game was end to end. The big Southport striker was causing a lot of problems and Valentine and Gainer had to work hard at the back to keep him at bay. After half an hour, the Reserves were awarded a penalty. Alex Holland turned his marker, was about to shoot but, he was clipped from behind. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Deon Park strode up and smashed the penalty home. 3 - 0, surely that was the end of Amatuers' hopes. Unfortunately not, they got one back just on the stroke of half-time which probably changed both Manager's team talks. Three minutes in to the second half, Amateurs scored another to test St Gerards' nerves but, they were to hold firm. Both teams played attacking, fast flowing football and it was a good game to watch. Amateurs had a succession of corners that they failed to convert, at the other end the hard working Scarborough and Holland both rattled the woodwork and, the 'keeper saved one with his outstretched leg after Scarborough had sent him the wrong way. The game was played in good spirit and even a spot of handbags at the end couldn't put a dampener on what is a very good three points for the Reserves.

Once again the monsoon like weather gave the groundstaff at St Gerards little chance of getting any football on this weekend at Wateringpool Lane. The good news is that turfcare expert Spenny has diagnosed the problem and advised a solution. We are now in the process of getting quotes so that the areas of the pitch that are causing the problems will be rectified in the close season.

Lostock St Gerards Reserves 2 Longridge Town 4

A disappointing performance saw the reserves lose for the first time since January 5th. Visiting Longridge Town started strongly and for the most part controlled this lively encounter. The reserves matched Longridge for the first twenty minutes before out of character mistakes saw them go two goals behind. However, ten minutes later, St Gerards were back in it. Deon Park converting from the spot after 'Sid' Wastell was felled. This led to an increase in the tempo of the game, with strong challenges going in from both sides. Shortly before half time a moment of controversy; David Scarborough beat the off side trap, was clean through on the keeper but, was brought down from behind by the last Town defender. The referee awarded the penalty but, didn't produce any cards. Why the offender wasn't sent off, I'll never know. Unfortunately, the usually dependable Park failed to convert the spot kick. Inevitably, Longridge went down the other end and scored a crackerjack of a third from twenty five yards. The second half started just as the first, with Town in the ascendancy. However, with half an hour to go, the Reserves finally found some fluency and started to put the Longridge defence under some scrutiny. To be fair to Longridge, they handled it well and it was they who appeared on the scoresheet again after the St Gerards defence failed to clear a corner. St Gerards did score again, Scarborough tapping in from close range following good work down the right by Stead. Top marks to Longridge, they deserved their three points. The Reserves will have to regroup for their tough away trip to Southport Amateurs on Saturday.

The reserve game at Appley Bridge was postponed at 11.45am this morning despite gallant attempts from the Bridge staff to get the game played. Waterlogging at the canal end of the ground the cause. With the backlog of fixtures it looks to be a busy few weeks ahead for players and staff as St Gerards pursue the dream league and cup double.

Match Report - Reserves, by James Lakeland

Leyland Red Rose 1 Lostock St. Gerards 4

The reserves continued their recent good run of form on what can only be described as a quagmire of a pitch. However, it was Red Rose who took an early advantage. After only three minutes, a hopeful ball into the area was not dealt with by the St Gerards’ defence and the Red Rose striker rose to nod home. This was to be St Gerards' only lapse in concentration. Having taken the lead, Red Rose began a war of attrition and tried to bully the young St Gerards lineup. However, they are made of sterner stuff, and despite the poor conditions got the ball down and began to play some attractive football. One passage of play down the St Gerards right hand side, saw some neat interchange between McCarthy, Park and Campbell. When the ball was eventually delivered into the box, Holland laid it back to Tinsley who dropped his shoulder to lose his marker and curled a left foot shot beyond the helpless Red Rose keeper.

The heavens opened and made conditions even worse but St Gerards continued to play football. More good work from the tireless Park saw a cross go in and as Red Rose desperately tried to clear the ball a shot went in which struck a Red Rose arm, the referee pointed immediately to the spot. Deon Park coolly slotted the penalty home. The midfield quartet of Cowell, Tinsley, McCarthy and Park were now in the ascendancy and never lost control of the midfield for the rest of the game.

The second half followed the pattern of the first, with St Gerards continuing to play football on a now atrocious surface and Red Rose struggling to keep pace with them. Red Rose introduced a couple of big strikers to change their luck but Valentine and Stokes dealt with everything that was thrown at them. With twenty minutes gone of the second half, Holland and Scarborough combined well to outfox the Red Rose defence. This led to Scarborough being one on one with the keeper and slotting home to put the result beyond doubt. With the points now in the bag, the two forwards were given a well, earned rest and Stead and Wastell were introduced. This led to even more chances being created and Stead could have easily come away with the match ball had he taken all his chances. However, it was Wastell who claimed the fourth and final goal. After good work by Stead, Wastell ran at the now demoralised Red Rose defence and drove a right foot shot into the corner of the net.

A very good performance on a very poor surface. Appley Bridge are next. Unbeaten in seven, can the reserves continue this rich vein of form?

An early morning pitch inspection ruled out any match action at Wateringpool Lane today and with the rain that came down in the early afternoon coupled with the forecast, there must be a doubt over the u18s fixture against Poulton Town. The reserve game against Leyland Red Rose was played on Worden Park resulting in a comprehensive 4 - 1 win. Match report to follow.

Match Report - 1st team

Lostock St Gerards 4 v Vickerstown 1

A brace from man of the match Stead, a towering header from Atherton and one from Edmeads saw St Gerards convincingly beat title chasers Vickerstown at Wateringpool Lane.

The match started fairly evenly with St Gerards possibly just having the edge. In the 30th minute a needless foul by Vickerstown resulted in Ryding whipping in a free kick which Stead glanced into the net.

Fifteen minutes into the second half and St Gerards increased their lead when a free kick by Stead squirmed under the keeper to make it 2-0. A third quickly followed when Atherton rose at the back post to crash a header goalwards, the keeper saved but Atherton followed in to make it 3-0. Vickerstown never gave up and were rewarded when Stead was harrassed into a back pass that was intercepted and the Vickerstown forward cooly rounded Barton to score. With 25 minutes to go and given the quality of the opposition St Gerards couldnt relax. Vickerstown were on top now and Gerards had to dig deep to keep on top.

As Vickerstown pressed for the equaliser they were punished when Edmeads beat the offside trap and rounded the keeper to score. That effectively sealed the match and the remaining few minutes were played out without incident.

With two defeats on the bounce Vickerstown will need to lift themselves for a potential title decider next week when they host leaders Stoneclough.

Match Report - Guildhall Cup Semi Final

Lostock St Gerards 1 V Southport Trinity 0

Good Friday indeed. The reserves marched convincingly into the Guildhall Cup final for the first time in Lostock St Gerards history.

On a bitterly cold afternoon at Croston, St Gerards started well with Dave 'Diz' Scarborough presented with a 1 on 1 in the first minute. Dis failed to score but the Trinity defence had an early warning of the potency of the Gerards front men. With the wind at their backs St Gerards pushed forward and had several near misses, but didn't really trouble the Trinity keeper.

In the 30th minute a challenge in the centre circle meant an end to the game for the impressive Watling and Rossall was introduced at right back.

St Gerards pushed forward and in the 44th minute Scarborough arrowed a shot into the bottom left corner of the net. 1-0 to the Gerards. There was barely time to kick of before the referee blew for half-time.......... but would it be enough?

Trinity came out in the second half with the wind still blowing strongly ....... surely they must fancy their chances of clawing back the one goal that they needed ? As Trinity pushed on they did get one back but the eagle eyed assistant linesman had spotted an infringement and the 'goal' was disallowed. As Trinity continued to press for the equaliser St Gerards began to exploit the gaps in Trinity's defence and had a couple of near misses.

The midfield with the flying Park and Campbell, and the rock like pairing of McCarthy and captain Tinsley worked tirelessly in front of the back four and apart from a 10 minute spell when the ball found Campbell's hand an astonishing number of times rarely put a foot (or hand) wrong.

A shattered Holland was replaced in the 75th minute by the flying 'Sid' Wastell, who picked up were Holland had left off and worked tirelessly to prevent the Trinity defenders getting any time on the ball.

Trinity pushed relentlessly but with the assured hands of Slater in goal and the impenetrable youthful defence of Baldwin, Rossall, Stokes and Valentine, Trinity were restricted to a handful of corners and speculative long range shots.

After seemingly an age the referee blew for full time St Gerards were in the final ( it was later explained to me that Rico's dog was responsible for 2 of the added minutes!). Both sets of players shook hands and the Trinity lads sportingly wished our team well for the final.

To the victor the spoils, a final tie now awaits 25th April at the LFA in Leyland against Tarleton Corinthians.

After a mix up with the kick off time we finally got going at 2.45pm. The sun was shining for the first friendly of the season and LSGFC needed to carry on where we left off last season. LSGFC visited Denton Town FC from the Lancashire and Cheshire Premier Division. Denton boast a 2 year unbeaten run in their respected league so this fixture was never going to be easy.

 

The game started at a fast pace with LSGFC on the back foot and finding it hard to clear their lines and pick up their individual men. Stu Parry made himself a great chance after just 5 minutes but could not direct his shot on target. Denton opened the scoring after a scramble in the box ended up with the ball in the back of the LSGFC net. A couple of minutes later Denton made it 2 - 0 with a strike from just inside the box. 10 minutes gone and LSGFC looked like they were in for a hard day. However, Stu Parry then pulled one back for the away side after 15minutes with a great strike and 5 minutes after this he managed to somehow curl the ball into the net from what seemed to be a cross ! 20 minutes gone and the game was tied at 2-2. LSGFC then started to take control of the game and started creating chances through consistantly good passing and movement. The Half Time whistle blew and the score was level at 2-2. LSGFC made a few changes at half time. Soon after the break LSGFC we in control of the game and were putting pressure on the Denton defence . The introduction of Alex Holland and David Scarborough upfront provided some much needed pace and energy which Denton found very hard to deal with. After 55 minutes LSGFC took the lead with a crisp strike from David Scarbourough from the edge of the 18 yard box. LSGFC kept going and Denton had little response and when Alex Holland made it 4-2 the game looked over. With about 15 minutes left Alex Holland raced through again and made it 5-2 which is how the game finished. Russ and Mick gave 1st team debuts to 3 players; Alex Holland, Jordan Valentine, and Scott Ryding who all turned in great performances. Will Yates was awarded the Man of the Match award for the game which he truly deserved after all his hard work in the middle of the park. After the game, Hyde Group supplied all the lads with a great feast off food which was followed by a couple of scoops in the Broomstairs Pub.

Lostock St Gerards 1st Team lift the Challenge Cup

Lostock St Gerards 1st Team triumphed in the Challenge Cup Final at Squires Gate's Ground tonight with a 5-0 win over BAE Canberra. Two goals from Hot-Shot Stu Parry along with a goal a piece from the midfield trio of Will Yates, Chris Bridgett and Russ Horsfield completed the rout. Congratulations to all the players and management involved for a great display of football. Hopefully this is the start of great things for the club.

The club would also like to thank both Squires Gate and the West Lancs League Committee for ensuring that the event ran smoothly.

Promotion from the West Lancs Division 2 is now the next aim !

Lostock St Gerards retain the Youth Trophy

Lostock St Gerards recovered from being a goal down after 10 minutes to win the LEP League Syndicate Trust Youth Trophy by beating Wyre 6-1 in front of over 200 spectators at Bamber Bridge FC.

Wyre took the lead when Jack Shields collected a neat pass from Chris Jones and finished expertly. Lostock St Gerards levelled five minutes later through Matthew Gardner and the half time interval saw the scores level at 1-1.

St Gerards took the lead through Darren Green in the 48th minutes following a defensive mistake and went 3-1 ahead when Alex Holland scored in the 56th minute. Man-of-the-Match Holland had a great game and he scored the goal of the match four minutes later when he carried the ball from the half way line and finished in the corner.

Green completed his hat trick with further goals in the 77th and 84th minutes and whilst Lostock St Gerards were worthy winners, the game was a lot closer than the score suggests.

The match was well controlled by referee Cliff Trickett and his assistants Dave Hesketh and Steve O’Connor.
